Yara's Siilinjärvi mine in Finland opened in 1979 and is Western Europe's only phosphate mine. Each year, the mine produces around 1,000,000 tonnes of phosphate (apatite concentrate), which is processed into phosphoric acid in Siilinjärvi, and further into fertilisers and feed phosphates in Yara´s plants in Finland and Norway.

At the Yara Siilinjärvi mine, apatite ore is quarried and the phosphorus separated from it is further refined into fertiliser at the more than 50 year old factory located next to the mine. E. Hartikainen has been handling the loading and transport of rock at the mine since 1979.

Yara´s mines in Finland produces this type of phopate rock. To produce a phosphorus fertilizer, the rock is treated with acid; sulfuric, phosphoric or nitric. Each method has its advantages and constraints. The sulfuric acid route produces a low phosphorus fertilizer – single superphosphate - which is half gypsum.

Technical and economic studies are now underway, but Yara Soumi Oy says already that building its own enrichment plant in Sokoli will be too costly.

Three large mining machines, called draglines, excavate the remaining overburden from the mine bench down to the top of the phosphate ore and place the overburden in previously mined out areas. This process, called stripping, exposes the phosphate ore, which is then excavated by the draglines and placed on the mine bench where it is stockpiled.

The Sokli phosphate reserve was discovered in 1967 and has been studied ever since. Over the years, the project has had several owners. Yara Suomi Oy became the owner of the project in 2007, after which the company initiated the assessment and permit processes that were necessary for eventually opening the mine.

The Araxá is located within 1km of the Vale's phosphate mine and SSP fertiliser plant, which is also hosted within the Barreiro Carbonatite. The Araxá is classed as a carbonatite deposit with REE (rare earth elements), niobium and phosphate mineralisation which has been enriched as a result of the effects of lateritisation in a tropical climate.
